The undergraduate curriculum includes core
requirements and electives to complete the American
Chemical Society certified degree in chemistry.
Also available is a program leading to a B.S. in
Biochemistry/Molecular Biology (see below), and this is offered in
conjunction with the Department of Biological Sciences.
|
The Master of Science degree
emphasizes course and research experiences relevant to careers
in industry, teaching, professional school, and advanced study.
In recent years the department has been near the top in
production of M.S. degrees at institutions not offering the
Ph.D. degree. Nearly 25% of our graduates have earned their B.S.
degrees in fields other than Chemistry!
|
The Department of Chemistry offers
a program leading to teacher certification within both Bachelor
of Science and the Master of Science degrees. For
post-baccalaureate students, certification only is also possible
within the department. In recent years, graduates of the
department have accepted positions in school and colleges across
Illinois and elsewhere.

A B.S. degree in
Biochemistry/Molecular Biology provides
a foundation for
advanced study in medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, and biology.
Graduates of this program are also well-qualified for entry-level positions in the pharmaceutical
and biotechnical industries
|
Students wishing to gain practical
work experience in chemistry should consider enrolling in the
cooperative education program. While working for an industrial
or governmental laboratory for one or more semesters, students
can earn college credit, money, and valuable experience.
