The focal point of the teaching and research activities of the Chemistry
Department is the new high-tech Science
Laboratory Building. This $36 million facility, dedicated in
the fall of 1997, contains teaching and research labs, a
multimedia classroom, an extensive chemical
storeroom, a self-serve glassblowing shop, a
machine shop, specialized NMR, EPR, and electron
microscopy rooms, a greenhouse, computer laboratories, and an expansive atrium,
complete with wireless internet access, that facilitates
interactions between students and faculty. Julian
Hall houses the newly-renovated departmental office, the
Chemistry Resource Room, a computer laboratory with 25
computers, two smart classrooms (one with student computer
workstations), and faculty offices. Julian Hall is
named for the eminent African-American chemist Percy Lavon Julian. Dr. Julian was a friend of the University and
member of the ISU Board of Regents in the 1960s.
